Short answerSEO for a travel agency in Nepal means ranking where your guests actually search: which for treks is often abroad, not Kathmandu. In our check of 18 searches from the US, UK and Australia, a Nepal-based operator's own website reached the top five in 13 of 15 searches for named treks, while broad searches like 'nepal tour package' mostly went to booking sites and big foreign tour companies.
Here’s the first thing to get right about SEO for a travel agency in Nepal: your guests aren’t searching from Thamel. If you sell treks to Western travellers, they’re searching from places like Denver, Manchester and Melbourne, months before they land. What Google shows them is not what you see when you search from your office.
So we checked what they see. On 21 October 2026 we ran six trekking and tour searches as Google shows them in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia: 18 searches, 169 results. (If you sell tours to visitors from India or elsewhere, check what Google shows there too; we only checked these three countries.) The pattern is clear, and it’s good news for Nepali operators. What foreign travellers see when they search
What we checked (top results, US / UK / Australia)
What we found
Searches about a specific trek (Annapurna circuit, Langtang valley, Poon Hill, Everest base camp cost)
a Nepal-based operator’s own site was in the top five in 12 of 12
“nepal tour package”
the top five went mostly to booking sites and foreign tour companies, in all three countries
“everest base camp trek” (no other words)
a Nepal-based operator was #1 in the US; in the UK and Australia, big international trekking companies and Wikipedia
Reddit in the top ten
8 of 18 searches
YouTube in the top ten
13 of 18 searches
Booking or review sites (TripAdvisor, TourRadar, Expedia…)
11 of 18 searches
What this means:
Specific beats broad. A traveller who types “langtang valley trek” or “everest base camp trek cost” has already chosen. Those searches are winnable for a Nepali company, and they’re closest to a booking.
Broad searches belong to giants. “Nepal tour package” is a fight with booking sites and companies with huge budgets. Don’t build your plan around it.
The conversation happens off your site too. Reddit threads and YouTube videos sit next to you in the results. Travellers read both before they email you.
Build one great page for every trek you run
This is where most of the ranking comes from. One page per trek, and each one should answer everything a careful traveller asks before paying a deposit:
The cost, clearly: what’s included, what isn’t, and what changes the price (group size, season, permits, flights to Lukla or Pokhara). “Everest base camp trek cost” is one of the searches where Nepali operators already rank abroad. Answer it better than anyone.
The day-by-day itinerary, with walking hours and altitudes from your own guides, not copied from another site.
Permits and rules, kept current. The rules do change: in 2023 the Nepal Tourism Board’s rule that foreign trekkers in national parks and conservation areas must go with a guide or porter from a registered trekking company led to a public dispute with the Everest region’s rural municipality, reported by The Kathmandu Post. Travellers search exactly this, so check the current rule at the source before you publish it, and date the page.
Best season and difficulty, honestly. If a trek is hard, say so. It saves you refund arguments later.
Your own photos from your own groups, with your guides in them. Stock photos make every company look the same.
Google’s guidance on helpful content asks whether a page shows first-hand experience. A trek page written by people who walk that trail every season is exactly that. It’s your biggest advantage over a booking site.
One warning. Don’t copy itinerary text from other companies, and don’t create dozens of near-identical pages that only swap the trek name. Google’s spam policies treat pages made at scale without adding value as spam.
Answer the questions travellers ask before they book
Beyond trek pages, write the guides travellers search for while planning: what to pack for a specific trek, how altitude sickness is managed on your treks, how tipping works, how to get from the airport, what happens if a flight to Lukla is cancelled. Answer them from your guides’ experience. Every one of these pages can link to the trek it belongs to.
Keep each guide to one clear question, and link to the trek page where the traveller can enquire. A guide that ranks but never leads to a trek page brings readers, not guests.
Plan around the seasons, early
Trekking in Nepal has two main seasons, spring and autumn, and travellers research months ahead. That means:
Pages for a season’s treks must be live and indexed before the planning months, not the week the season opens. New pages can take weeks to be found and longer to climb.
Update prices and departure dates every year, and change the “updated” date only when something real changed.
Use the quiet months to write. The monsoon is when you have time; it’s also when next season’s travellers start reading.
Reviews, Reddit and YouTube: be worth mentioning
Booking and review sites appeared in 11 of the 18 searches we checked. Reddit in 8. YouTube in 13. You can’t buy a place in any of them, but you can make it likely:
Ask every group for a review at the end of the trek, on Google and the review sites your guests use. Ask everyone, not just the groups you expect to be happy: Google’s rules forbid picking only happy customers.
Reply to every review, including the difficult ones. Future guests read your replies.
Film the trek honestly. A short video of a real day on the trail, with your guide talking, is the kind of thing that ranks on YouTube and gets shared on Reddit.
And never post fake reviews or fake Reddit recommendations. Travellers spot them, and the platforms remove them.
Don’t forget the walk-ins: Google Maps in Thamel
Not every guest books from abroad. Some walk into Thamel looking for a trek or a hotel. In our study of 533 Kathmandu Valley Google Maps listings, the travel and hotel listings had a median of 119 reviews, and all but one of the travel and trekking agencies listed their hours (hotel listings show check-in times instead). When complete profiles are that common, reviews and real photos are where you stand out. Our local SEO guide walks through it.
Make the website work for a traveller on a phone
A traveller in another country is often on a phone, on a hotel or airport connection, comparing three companies in three tabs. Your site needs to:
Load fast on a phone, even with large trek photos (compress them).
Show the price and the enquiry button without hunting.
Offer WhatsApp and email, because many travellers prefer to message.
Let them pay the deposit by card. A Nepali bank’s card gateway takes foreign Visa and Mastercard; our guide to the payment gateway options in Nepal compares them.
Reply within hours, not days. The traveller emailing you is emailing two other companies too.
Your guests search from abroad. Check what they see, not what you see in Kathmandu.
Specific trek searches are winnable: Nepali operators reached the top five in 13 of the 15 named-trek searches we checked. Broad “tour package” searches mostly aren’t.
Build one honest, first-hand page per trek, with clear costs, current permits and your own photos.
Earn reviews, be worth mentioning on Reddit and YouTube, and publish before the planning months.

Frequently asked questions
Can a small Nepali trekking company rank on Google in the US or UK?
Yes, for specific searches. In our October 2026 check, a Nepal-based operator reached the top five in all 12 searches for the Annapurna circuit, Langtang valley, Poon Hill and Everest base camp trek cost in the US, UK and Australia. Broad searches like 'nepal tour package' are much harder.
Should my trekking website show prices?
For the searches that bring bookings, usually yes. 'Everest base camp trek cost' is one of the searches where Nepali operators rank well abroad, and a page that answers the cost question clearly, with what's included and what isn't, has a reason to rank.
Is TripAdvisor or my website more important?
Both appear. Booking and review sites showed up in 11 of the 18 searches we checked abroad, so your reviews there are seen. But your own trek pages are what rank for specific trek searches and keep the booking direct.
How long does SEO take for a travel agency?
Months, not weeks. Plan around the seasons: travellers research a trip well before they fly, so pages for spring and autumn treks need to be live and indexed early in the planning months, not the week the season starts.
Do I need a separate page for every trek?
Yes, one page per trek you actually run, written from your own experience, with your own photos, itinerary, cost and permits. Copying another company's itinerary text doesn't help, because Google tends to show one version of duplicated content.
Does Reddit really matter for a trekking company?
It shows up. Reddit appeared in the top ten for 8 of the 18 searches we checked abroad. You can't buy your way in there; the best you can do is be the company people mention after a good trek.
