Short answerLocal SEO in Nepal means getting your business into Google Maps and the local results when nearby customers search. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. In our study of 533 Kathmandu Valley listings, the top ten had more than twice as many reviews as those ranked 21 to 40.
When someone in Kathmandu types “dental clinic near me” or “ielts class in Putalisadak”, Google usually shows a map with a few businesses before any website. Getting into that list is what local SEO in Nepal is about. It’s free, and it’s often the cheapest customer you’ll ever get.
Local SEO advice is easy to repeat and hard to check. So we checked. On 21 October 2026 we pulled up to 40 Google Maps results for each of 15 customer searches across five trades in the Kathmandu Valley: 533 different businesses. Their numbers run through this guide, next to Google’s own rules. If you want it done for you, local SEO is part of our SEO services in Nepal.
How Google decides who shows up on Maps
Google’s help page says it plainly: “Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.”
Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. A complete profile with the right category is easier to match.
Distance: how far you are from the person searching. You can’t change this, which is why a clinic two kilometres away can outrank a better one across town.
Popularity (Google also calls it prominence): how well-known you are. Google says links from other websites and your reviews count, and that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.”
And one line every owner should read twice: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” Anyone selling a guaranteed number-one spot on Maps is selling something Google says doesn’t exist.
What 533 Kathmandu listings tell us
Here’s what we found across education consultancies, travel and hotels, clinics, shops and software companies. (The method and every number are in our full study.)
What we measured
Result
Median reviews, listings in positions 1–10
126.5
Median reviews, positions 21–40
57.5
Listings rated 4.5 stars or higher
81% (427 of 529 rated listings)
Listings with a website linked
81% overall, 62% of clinics
Names containing “best” or “top”
25 of 533
Three things stand out:
Stars don’t set you apart. Review counts might. When four in five businesses show 4.5 stars or more, a 4.8 is normal. What differs is how many people bothered to write one. The top ten had more than twice the reviews of positions 21 to 40.
Distance still matters. Our searches were centred on central Kathmandu, and some well-reviewed businesses sat lower, possibly because they’re further away. Google counts distance, which is one reason nobody can promise a position.
Clinics are the most open trade. 38% of the clinic listings had no website linked, the most of the five trades (online shops were next, at 30%). A clinic with a real page about its treatments has an easy edge.
To be honest about limits: this is one snapshot from one location, and a pattern isn’t proof that reviews caused the ranking. But it matches what Google itself says counts.
How to add your business to Google Maps in Nepal
This is the question people often type as “google map ma aafno location kasari add garne”. The steps:
Go to google.com/business and sign in with the Google account the business will keep. Not a staff member’s personal one.
Type your business’s real name. Exactly as it appears on your sign board (more on this below).
Choose your main category carefully: “Dental clinic”, not “Health”. Google uses it to match you to searches.
Add your location, or your service area. If customers come to you, drop the pin on your actual door. If you go to customers (home tutors, repairs, cleaning), Google’s guidelines say a service-area business should hide its address and list the areas it serves.
Add a phone number you control. Google requires a number “under the direct control of the business”. A shared or borrowed number causes problems later.
Verify. Google chooses the method for you based on your business type and region: a short video, a call or text, an email, a live video call, or a postcard. Google says its review can take up to 5 business days; a postcard usually arrives within 14 days.
Tip for Kathmandu addresses: many addresses here are a tole and a landmark rather than a street and number. That’s fine. What matters is that the pin sits exactly on your entrance and that you write the address the same way everywhere: your profile, your website, your Facebook page and any directory.
Your business name: the rule most profiles break
In our study, 25 listing names included words like “best” or “top”, and 42 added something like “in Kathmandu”. Some of those may be genuine names. Many look like keywords added for ranking.
Google’s guidelines are clear: the name “should reflect your business’s real-world name”, and adding unnecessary information “could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.” Yes, some of those profiles still rank today. But a suspended profile can disappear from Maps, reviews and all, which is a terrible trade for a slightly better position.
The safe rule: use the name customers see on your sign board and your website. Nothing more.
Reviews: how to get more, honestly
Since reviews are the clearest difference we saw between the top and the bottom of the list, this is where your effort pays most.
Ask every customer, not just the ones you expect to be happy. Google’s rules forbid picking only happy customers. Ask at a natural moment: when the work is done, when the order arrives.
Make it one tap. Your Business Profile gives you a short review link. Send it on WhatsApp or Viber the same day.
Reply to every review, good and bad. Google recommends it, and the next customer reads your replies.
Never buy reviews or offer anything for one: no discounts, gifts or free services, whether the review is good or bad. Google’s content policies ban reviews posted because of an incentive, and Google removes reviews that break them.
A steady trickle beats a burst. Ten honest reviews a month for a year will move you further than fifty in one week.
Make your profile complete (it’s the relevance factor)
Google says a profile with accurate, complete information is easier to match to the right searches, and an inaccurate one “might not show up for relevant searches in your area.” So fill in everything:
Hours, including festival closures. During Dashain and Tihar, set special hours so nobody travels to a closed door.
Photos of your real place, team and work. Not stock images.
Services or products, with the words customers use (“root canal”, “IELTS class”, “Annapurna circuit trek”).
A website link to a page about the service, not just your homepage.
Posts and updates, when you have something real to say: a new intake, a new branch, a seasonal offer.
Beyond the profile: your website and other listings
Google says links from other websites also count towards how well-known you are. Two things help most:
A website page for each main service and location you actually serve, with the same name, address and phone as your profile. If your page loads slowly on a phone, fix that first: our guide to website traffic with no leads shows why.
The same details in every directory where your customers look. One spelling of your name, one phone number, everywhere.
Avoid creating separate pages for cities you don’t serve, with only the city name changed. Google treats near-identical pages like that as spam.
How much does local SEO cost in Nepal?
The Business Profile itself is free. Google charges nothing to list, verify or update it, and nothing for reviews. What local SEO costs is time: setting up the profile properly once, then asking for reviews, replying to them and keeping details current every week.
So the real choice is who spends that time:
You or your staff: no fee, maybe an hour or two a week once it’s set up. This guide is the checklist.
An agency: a monthly fee, usually as part of wider SEO with your website. Our SEO prices in Nepal page shows what we charge and what’s included.
Whoever does it, be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed Maps position. Google says that can’t be bought.
How long does local SEO take?
It depends on your competition, distance and how many reviews you can honestly earn, so nobody can promise a date. What you can expect: verification within days to a couple of weeks; a complete profile showing for your own business name almost immediately; and a climb for wider searches (“dentist in Baneshwor”) that’s measured in months, driven mostly by reviews and your website.
Track it in your Business Profile’s performance section: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks, month by month.
The short version
Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and popularity, and says no one can pay for a better spot.
In our study of 533 Kathmandu listings, the top ten had more than twice the reviews of positions 21 to 40, while star ratings were nearly all the same.
Use your real name, an exact pin, a phone you control, and complete details.
Ask every customer for a review, offer nothing for it, and reply to all of them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I add my business to Google Maps in Nepal?
Create a free Business Profile at google.com/business, add your real business name, category, location or service area, phone and hours, then verify it. Google picks the verification method for you: a video, a call or text, an email, a live video call or a postcard.
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Google says its review can take up to 5 business days after you finish the steps, and occasionally longer. A postcard code usually arrives within 14 days and expires after 30.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
No. Google's own help page says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Can I add 'best' or 'in Kathmandu' to my business name on Google?
Only if it's genuinely part of your real-world name. Google's guidelines say extra information in the name isn't permitted and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.
How much does local SEO cost in Nepal?
Google Business Profile is free, including verification and reviews. The cost is the time to set it up and keep earning reviews, or an agency's monthly fee if you hand it over.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
Not to appear, but it helps you win. Google counts links from other websites towards how well-known a business is, and a good page gives searchers a reason to choose you. In our study, 38% of clinic listings had no website at all.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
Usually the profile isn't verified, the category doesn't match what people search, the location pin is wrong, or the business is too far from the searcher. Google also says inaccurate information can stop a profile from showing for relevant searches.
